Julé! 10/31 - Foods!

kat_lair: (GEN - bloom where you're planted)

***

The creative prompt for [community profile] sunshine_revival was a recipe but I rarely 'do' recipes and am more of 'let's throw these things together' kinda gal. It works most of the time.

The journaling prompt was favourite summer associated foods, so this is just a ramble of Stuff Kat Likes To Eat When It's Too Hot To Eat

Smoothies: I make a big jug of this, breakfast solved for like three days. I tend to default to 'plain yoghurt, frozen berries, honey, water' mix (I don't like my smoothies very sweet) but recently my peanut butter jar suggested that I could add peanut butter to my smoothies and now I Am Intrigued. It feels extremely indulgent tho. Peanut butter and banana smoothie sounds like a desert! But I want to try.

Berries: I have yet to find a berry I don't like in some form or another. It's one of the main things I miss about Finland; ready access to fresh berries, like blueberries from the forest, or various currants and gooseberries from the garden. My local Tesco tends to have berries on discount often if you hit the store at the right time. I've been known to make a dinner out of that.

Salads: Almost anything goes. My veg box is currently delivering so much green leavy stuff I'm shoving it everywhere. I like to throw in protein (chicken, fish, tofu, hummus) to make a lazy meal out of it. Feta cheese is an indulgence. I also like adding pickled/sour things like pickled cabbage or cucumber, kimchi (should make some again), olives, capers etc. Nom. Fruit if I want to get fancy with it. Seeds definitely.

Hummus: I make this quite often, usually heavily lemon flavoured.

Oven omelette:
Eggs and whatever suitable veg/other things you have (salmon is super nice here). Top with cheese. And add cottage cheese for extra protein and to make it even more filling. Do a whole oven tray (10-12 eggs) and your breakfast/lunch/snack is sorted for several days.

I do also like to barbecue things but can't be bothered to do it just for me. But when [personal profile] dreamersdare and [personal profile] pushkin666 are visiting it is by now a tradition for me to make some salmon bulgogi for the bbq. And I'll probably make some flat breads and tzatziki to, you know, make it fusion cuisine :D

And finally, new potatoes with butter. With some chives. Honestly, so good.

Crossovers.

rogueslayer452: (BSG. OMG LOL Awesome.)
[personal profile] rogueslayer452
Sometimes I wished fandom fucked with crossovers more like it used to. *

Maybe I'm not looking in the right places since I know it stills happens, it's just that I remember when fandom crossovers were a massive thing especially during my early days in fandom. Yeah, fanfic fusion AUs exist, but it's not the same. There would be fanworks of various kinds where alternate universes featuring different fictional worlds would visit each other, either already existed in or created a kind of wormhole or portal to go into each other's world. It didn't need to make sense, it just needed to be like "how would these characters from this story interact with these others from this other story?" and that's that. But I rarely see those kinds of fanworks anymore, at least not in the way that it used to thrive in fandom spaces. I only see aspects of it now among the cdrama fandom. Of course, this is mere speculation on my part, I kinda theorize that the rise and fall of SuperWhoLock sort of got people to shy away from doing crossovers in such a way, because it was viewed as "cringe" since it was everywhere and dominated a lot of the fandomsphere especially on Tumblr. Which would be a shame if that were true. There is something amazing and uniquely fannish about crossovers, whether it be fanfiction, fanart, fanvids, or classic image manips, it's always been interesting to see the kinds of creativity fandom can come up with. You might not always know the fandoms in question, but it's nice to see people having fun.

(* I'm including myself in this as well, since I had once created some crossover fanworks in the past but have also unfortunately fallen off that wagon and need to get back on.)

Title: Year of the Cat
Author:[personal profile] kat_lair
Fandom: Life of Mars
Pairing:  Gene Hunt/Sam Tyler, Gene Hunt & Sam Tyler
Tags: Gen or Pre-Slash, Cats, Subtext
Rating: G
Word count: 2,111

Summary: Tyler,” Gene said, in tones that told Sam he’d already guessed the answer. “Did you adopt some flea-ridden moggy?”

Author notes:
Written as a thank you for a beta [personal profile] smallhobbit did for me! The title is borrowed from the song by Al Stewart published in 1976. It has the same dreamlike quality of getting lost 'where they turn back time' and feeling your life 'like a river running through' as the show. The setting of the song (Vietnam) is rather different from 1970s Manchester but the last two verses resonate strongly, just swap the pronouns...

"Well morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away your choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on

But the drumbeat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometime you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay"

Promethia and I posted the final chapter of In the Sight of Angels (and Ghosts), our Good Omens/Dead Boy Detectives crossover. :)

Summary: The story of how Edwin Payne, Dead Boy Detective, met and befriended Aziraphale, Angel and Bookseller. And how that friendship flourished despite initial set-backs.
22k, 6/6

Also, if you wonder why AO3 was down the other day the explanation is better than you could ever hope for.

YouTube algorithm threw this at me tonight and on this occasion the YouTube algorithm was bang on. This is, in fact, relevant to my interest. No, I've never heard of them until today. No, I did not know any of their names (I do now so A+ marketing). But what I do know is that this is the kind of soft queer pining vibe I'm absolutely into. And it's a bop.

Independence Day?

Came across this clip of James Akaster on Seth Meyers... Should start at 12:42 when he begins to talk about the No Kings Day:

His basic argument is that kings aren't a bad thing. Go on. Kick out Trump and re-join the Commonwealth! ;)

"American Idiot" by Green Day
Well, maybe I'm the faggot, America
I'm not a part of the MAGA agenda
Now everybody, do the propaganda
And sing along to the age of paranoia
"Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)" by K'naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz Ahmed, and Residente
It's really astonishing that in a country founded by immigrants,
"immigrant" has somehow become a bad word.
"Combat Rock" by Sleater-Kinney
Where is the questioning? Where is the protest song?
Since when is skepticism un-American?
Dissent's not treason but they talk like it's the same
Those who disagree are afraid to show their face
"Mosh" by Eminem
Imagine it pourin', just rainin' down on us
Moshpits outside the Oval Office
Someone's tryna tell us somethin', maybe this is God just
Sayin' we're responsible for this monster, this coward
That we have empowered

"I like Scandinavians, skiing, swimming and socialists who realize it is our business to promote social progress by peaceful methods. I dislike football, economists, eugenicists, Fascists, Stalinists, and Scottish conservatives. I think that sex is necessary and bankers are not."

Title: like what you (don't) see
Author:[personal profile] kat_lair
Fandom: K.A.R.D.
Pairing: Matthew Kim | BM/Kim Taehyung | J.Seph, Kim Taehyung | J.Seph/Original Male Character(s)
Tags: Ficlet, Canon Compliant, Jealousy, Denial of Feelings
Rating: G
Word count: 720

Summary: “He’s looking at you,” Matthew murmurs under the guise of bending down to hand over a bottle of water.

Author notes:
I was looking for a prompt to write something for the first challenge of [community profile] sunshine_revival and then K.A.R.D. dropped Touch. And listen, they know what their target audience (the thirsty bis and pans) want and keep them well fed. I've been low key wanting more fic for this pairing and the MV gave me this brief frame at 2.09 where the (very hot) dancer looks like he's checking Taehyung out and... Well. Longer fic has been written on a flimsier premise. Unbetaed so if you spot a typo you absolutely should tell me about it.
